With so many companies offering ashes jewellery, choosing who to make your ashes memorial can be overwhelming. Finding a design you love is obviously key. However, being such a sentimental purchase requires a few more considerations. Here, Annie from Forget-Me-Not Glass takes you through a handy 5 point checklist to help you decide who is best to make your ashes jewellery / memorial;
1. Is it actually hand made?
Is there evidence that your memorial jewellery is
being made by hand in the UK?

Photos in the ‘About’ section of a website and their social media should show some of the
process of the jewellery being made. If there are none, it’s likely the company is outsourcing the work or buying in the jewellery settings from overseas.
This can be an issue if you need a bigger size, as, in companies that are buying in the pieces pre-made often cannot make bigger sizes. Also, If something needs resizing or mending at a later date, then this often will not be possible if it isn’t handmade.
2. What materials is it made from?
Choosing the materials your piece is made from is one of the most important factors when selecting your ashes jewellery or memorial.

Glass is the superior material for cremation ashes jewellery & memorials. It is incredibly hard wearing and UV safe, meaning the glass will retain its natural colour over the years and cannot fade.
Resin is a cheaper alternative (a pourable plastic) for ashes jewellery and its ease of use has led to many many companies and individuals offering memorial jewellery of this kind. One advantage is that is can be used to encase hair and fur. The disadvantage of resin is that it can discolour over time as it is not UV safe. Ashes in resin can also be adversely affected by water, soaps and cleaning products. Extra vigilance is therefore needed to be taken to remove these pieces regularly to prevent long lasting damage.
3. What do other customers think about this business?
Customer reviews are a great way of finding out about previous customers experience. They can give insight into satisfaction with ordering process as well as their finished piece. You should never feel any pressure from companies or individuals to make a purchase.
4. Is there a guarantee?
With such a precious purchase it is important to ask is there any manufacturing guarantee?. Also what happens if I need it resizing later on, or even a repair. Would that be possible and would I be able to speak to the person who made my piece?
Will my ashes jewellery still look good in years to come?
Something made with precious metals such as sterling silver, gold & platinum, will stand the test of time. Plated metals should be avoided as eventually the metal coating will wear away. Ashes jewellery made from resin may work for you if you don't wish to wear it all the time, or if you are not outdoors that much. For those that intend to wear their jewellery all the time or spend alot of time outdoors, ashes in glass maybe a better choice as it will keep its colour forever.
